Cyclist Killed by Turning Semi-Truck

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A bicyclist is run over and killed as a semi-truck made a wide turn at a the busy Marigny intersection of St. Claude and Elysian Fields Avenues.

People who watched helplessly as the 52 year old cyclist was crushed under a turning 18-wheeler say both were traveling the same direction on St. Claude towards the quarter.

“I’m standing at the St. Claude bus stop,” says one eyewitness. “When the truck was making that turn, and if you’re on a bike, he’s coming from that way, you don’t really know. I seen a guy on the bike on the ground. His whole face, brah.”

NOPD traffic investigators say as the 18-wheeler was making a wide right turn onto Elysian Fields  is when the bicycle rider got caught-up under the wheels.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name is being withheld until family is notified.

“I hope he ain’t nobody that work in the French Quarter, man. Because that’s going to be a lot of hurting to his friends and family,” says the eyewitness.

The 51 year old truck driver hauling hazardous material was not cited.

Blood tests results to determine any impairment are pending.
