METAIRIE, La (WGNO) – Only one of the two rabbits that were tossed from a car window in Lafreniere Park almost a month ago has survived.

Dr. Gregory Rich, director of West Esplanade Veterinary Clinic and Bird Hospital, says the rabbit nicknamed Hope has died of an infection after surgery to repair her two broken legs.  Also, Hope was pregnant and her two babies did not survive either. The other rabbit, nicknamed Faith survived and is recovering, along with her two babies.

Dr. Rich says it was “incomprehensible” that someone tried to kill the rabbits, but he’s encouraged by the outpouring of support for the effort to save them.

An account on the crowdsourcing website GoFundMe has raised more than $3,000 more than enough to pay for the rabbits medical care.

Dr. Rich says Faith and her babies will be available for adoption in a few weeks, after the babies have been weaned.  Potential adoptive families will need to fill out an application form with the clinic, and go through an interview process to determine their suitability.  There’s also an adoption fee of $50.
