178864435BATON ROUGE (WGNO) – Governor Bobby Jindal is expected to sign a $53 million fee hike to cover the costs of uninsured drivers in the state.

It adds a $75 penalty on drivers who don’t have insurance, on top of other penalties and fines. It also makes it more expensive for people to reinstate their driving privileges after they’re caught without insurance.

The fees will pay for an insurance verification system that state troopers can use on the spot in a traffic check, and it will boost state troopers salaries from around $35 thousand for entry level troopers to around $46 thousand.

HB872 is expected to become law July 1, 2014.
