NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Our New Orleans Voodoo Athletes of the week did something they haven’t done in over ten year. The John Curtis Christian men’s baseball team faced former champs and runner-ups to reach the finals.

The class 3a state championship game featured two schools familiar to each other — John Curtis versus Evangel. The patriots knew their opponent all too well.

“In the course of their 4 playoff games, they had given up no runs, and they had scored 16,”Coach Johnny Curtis said. “We knew it was going to be a tough battle for us. In that inning we just couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

But the Patriots haven’t been to the semifinals since 2010. The last time Curtis played for the state title was back in 2002. The Patriots eliminated teams that were former champs or teams that were runner-ups like Parkview and University High.

“What can we do better for next year? This group of kids over this last year was 48-14. That’s an awful lot of wins playing against really good programs. I think they’ve set a precedent for our program in terms of the direction its going,” Curtis said.
