Saints Trade Up , Select Speedy Cooks in First Round

2014 NFL DraftNEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The Saints offense needed an infusion of speed and they got it in the first round of the NFL draft.

The Saints traded up 7 spots to jump to #20 and select Oregon State wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

The 5-10 Cooks runs a 4.35 40 yard dash. Cooks also ran the 60 meters and 200 meters for the Oregon State track team.

He applied for the NFL draft, and forfeited his senior season.

In 2013, Cooks set Pac 12 records for receptions with (120) and yards receiving (1,730).

Cooks finished his college career with 3,272 yards on 226 catches.

He had 24 career touchdown receptions. The Saints traded their first round pick #27 and a their round choice to Arizona to be in a position to select Cooks.

Tonight head coach Sean Payton said the Saints had about three players in the bullpen and there were several picks before the Saints were slotted at number 27.

Sean Payton said Cooks will also be used as a punt and kick returner.
