Jefferson Parish deputies took Darwin Bethune to jail Thursday afternoon to face a murder charge, but the would not elaborate on the motive for the attack.

Bethune is accused of killing army sergeant Joseph Anderson on New Year’s Day in Marrero.  The shooting happened moments after Anderson dropped off his three kids at the home of relatives on Ray Street.

But for the WGNO News Sunday morning program Behind the Badge, Sheriff Newell Normand did discuss the motive.

“It turns out that he [Bethune] was the boyfriend of the ex-wife, and that’s the connection in this particular case,” Normand told WGNO News anchor Erin Nicole.

As deputies took him to jail, Bethune told WGNO News, “I didn’t kill this man.  I’ve been accused of killing him.”
