New Orleans Police saturday morning arrested a gunman who opened fire in an Eastern New Orleans beauty salon and held six customers at gunpoint for an hour. One employee was wounded, but officers were able to get the gunman into custody and the store’s customers to safety.

At around 10:25am, officers were called out to the 8000-block of Downman Road to investigate a complaint of multiple shots fired inside the salon.  Upon their arrival, officers heard several shots fired inside the business. They immediately set up a perimeter around the area.

investigators say 19-year-old Pershing Gilmore of Laplace entered the salon with his mother, who was a customer.  Once seated, the two had an argument, which quickly turned violent. Gilmore jumped from his chair, pulled a handgun from his waistband and placed it under his chin. Several customers saw this, and started fleeing for safety. Others locked themselves inside of a bathroom. Gilmore attempted to gain entry into the locked bathroom but he was unsuccessful. He fired several shots into the lower part of the bathroom door, striking a male employee who sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg. No one else was hurt.

The NOPD’s SWAT Team arrived and made contact with Gilmore. Moments after officers spoke with him on the phone, Gilmore came out of the business with his mother and peacefully surrendered. Everyone else in the salon left the building unharmed.

The male victim that sustained the leg wound was transported to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Officers recovered a .40 caliber pistol inside the salon along with several bullet casings.

Gilmore is booked with Aggravated Battery by Shooting, False Imprisonment; Offender Armed with a Dangerous Weapon.   He could face more charges once the investigation is presented to the District Attorney’s Office.
