When Mayor Mitch Landrieu laid out his budget for the City of New Orleans, he said it will be tough to give Sheriff Marlin Gusman and the Orleans Parish Prison more money next year, but for the rest of 2013 he found a way to throw almost $2 million the sheriff’s way.

The city will give the sheriff $1.88 million which will go to new staff and pay raises, according to Sheriff Gusman.

The two sides have been arguing over funding, so this is a welcome agreement.

Besides the new money, the city will continue to pay about $22 per inmate per day to the Sheriff, but the two sides still have to negotiate over next year’s funding.
