The 2013 Tulane Green Wave football team is showing some true grit.

Cairo Santos kicked a 42 yard field goal in the third overtime as Tulane beat East Caroline 36-33 Saturday at the Superdome.

Tulane played without injured starting quarterback Nick Montana. But, backup Devin Powell performed admirably. Powell threw touchdown passes of 25 and 6 yards to wide receiver Ryan Grant in overtime.

“This is a great victory,” said head coach Curtis Johnson. “Hats off to these coaches. Whatever we are paying them, we are not paying them enough.”

After East Carolina missed a field goal to start the third overtime, Johnson opted not to run a play from scrimmage. He brought in Santos, the reigning Lou Groza award winner to the game winning field goal. Santos kicked the game winning field goal last week on the final play to beat North Texas.

Tulane moved to 5-2 overall, and 3-0 in Conference USA.

Tulane won three games in a row for the first time since 2004.
