A federal judge has ordered the release of Herman Wallace after he spent 40 years in solitary confinement for murder.

Wallace is a former Black Panther and one of the Angola Three.  He worked for years to improve conditions for inmates.

A judge ordered Wallace be released after ruling that women were systematically excluded from the grand jury that indicted him for murdering a prison guard.

Tuesday night, a crowd gathered to cheer Wallace’s arrival outside the emergency room at LSU’s hospital on Perdido Street.

His lawyers say Wallace lost between 40 and 50 pounds before learning he had terminal liver cancer this summer.
