New NOPD officers are receiving training on how to handle domestic violence situations.

The New Orleans Family and Justice Center helped organize Thursday morning’s session.

Department recruits are learning its policies and procedures as well as current laws regarding domestic violence.

“These are the types of calls where police officers either get killed or get injured,” said Family Justice Center Executive Director Mary Claire Landry.  “And so we really want them to be as prepared as they possibly can when they walk into these situations and really be able to assess what the level of danger is.”

The recruits responsibilities will eventually include assisting area organizations that help victims of domestic violence.
