As the nation remembered the 911 attacks, some Metairie neighbors gathered in a show of solidarity.

Dozens waved flags on the neutral ground along Veterans Memorial Boulevard at Causeway.

The patriotic wave was followed by a prayer vigil.

Participants say even here in Metairie it’s important to remember the nation’s fallen heroes.

“Because it’s important for all Americans and important for all Americans and it’s very, very important for us to make a stand to show the world what we’re about,” organizer Melanie Melton said.

“It’s been twelve years that I happened and it can’t happen again. We’re here to say we don’t want it happening no more,” participant Brian Ardoin said.

Organizers plan to hold a similar remembrance ceremony each year.
