The Saints didn’t wait for next week’s mandatory NFL cut to do some trimming.

8 players got the axe, in cuts announced by head coach Sean Payton Monday evening.

The Saints released wide receivers Steve Breaston and Patrick Crayton, cornerback AJ Davis (waived injured), wide receiver Jarred Fayson, guard Ricky Henry, linebacker Chase Thomas, and cornerback Dion Turner.

The Saints also released quarterback Seneca Wallace. Wallace struggled against the Raiders. One week earlier Luke McCown threw a pair of touchdown passes in a win over Kansas City.

McCown, who has apparently secured the backup quarterback spot, said he must continue to improve.

“I need to continue to prove their decision was correct,” said McCown.

The Saints also placed defensive end Kenyon Coleman on injured reserve (torn pectoral muscle). Coleman’s 2013 season is officially over.

The Saints place at Houston Sunday. Head coach Sean Payton said he expects the starters to play at least a half. They could play more said Payton, depending on the number of plays starters get in the first half.
