An early morning fire on Tuesday destroyed a building in the 2800 block of Urquhart Street in the Ninth Ward.  Firefighters say the building was already deemed unsafe for habitation by the city, but at least ten people were living inside it and using extension cords to run power from neighboring homes.

The fire started at about 4:30 in the morning.  Firefighters say the building was divided into as many as 17 one bedroom apartments.  They say the went room to room looking for anyone who might be trapped and found one man who was taken to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

As of Tuesday night, the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
