BBQ Makeovers

Summertime grilling is a favorite pastime, but even a simple barbecue can be loaded with unwanted calories.  In today’s Get the Skinny, Molly shows us simple steps for a BBQ Makeover that’ll save you nearly a thousand calories, not to mention a day’s worth of saturated fat and sugar!

Cheeseburger before:  easily 1100+ calories, 25 grams saturated fat, 60+ grams carbs

Cheeseburger after:  300 calories, <3 grams saturated fat, <20 grams carbs

  • Go with one of our ‘LOVE IT’ patties, or homemade with extra-lean beef/bison/turkey
  • Light wheat bun or sandwich thin
  • Thinly-sliced reduced-fat cheese
  • Fresh spinach or lettuce leaves, tomatoes, grilled onions
  • Mustard, ketchup, and/or reduced-fat mayo


Potato salad before:  350 calories, 30+ grams carbs per cup

Potato salad after:  85 calories, 7 grams carbs per cup

Summertime Cauliflower Potato Salad by Jack Treuting, Culinary Director of Rouses Markets

¾ head of cauliflower, diced

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon olive oil

¼ cup red onion, minced

1 tablespoon capers, rough cut

1 garlic clove, minced

3 tablespoons reduced-fat mayonnaise (or can substitute Veganaise for vegan alternative)

2 heaping tablespoons parsley, chopped

1 sprig green onion, thinly sliced

½ teaspoon Dijon mustard

¼ teaspoon sea salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper


Mix all ingredients well; serve chilled.


Sangria before: 200 calories and 20-30 grams sugary carbs per 8 ounces

Sangria after: <100 calories and <5 grams sugar per 8 ounces

Swerve-sweetened Sangria

2 bottles red table wine

1 liter Sprite Zero (or 3 cans La Croix Sparkling Water, in Grapefruit)

½ – 1 cup Swerve Sweetener, depending on taste (dissolve in one cup of wine first)

1 cup each Trop 50 Orange Juice & Trop 50 Pomegranate Blueberry

Orange slices & apple slices

Mix all ingredients together and serve.
