The New Era track club was formed in 2005 and it currently consists of a host of champions: Marquita Stalbert of McDonogh #35, Aleia Hobbs of McMain, Bryiana Richardson of Helen Cox, Shannon Ray of Xavier Prep, and Nicole Henderson of McDonogh #35.

These talented ladies won the Golden West Invitational in Berkeley, California. They scored 69 points to win. That number is extra significant considering that the other squads in the event had both boys and girls teams contributing to their team score.

Coach Edwin Joseph said he and coach Lionel Breaux are trying to teach more than just success on the track: “If it’s just about running, we could stay home. It’s about getting to the next level and doing all the things God wants them to do. Be good servants and good citizens.”

These citizens of New Orleans were outstanding in the 4 by 100 meters. Shannon Ray ran the anchor as New Era ran a time of 45.12 seconds, almost a second better than the second place finishers.

Breaux said of these girls, coaching them is a blast: “Very easy. It’s fun. Very easy.”
