A heavy downpour didn’t stop Alexis Gordon from Chalmette High School from displaying her talents.

Alexis set a school record for the discus throw at 134 feet, two inches at the Bobby Nuss Invitational. Then, she bested that in the regionals with a throw of 134 feet, nine inches.

Alexis aims for a state title Saturday in Baton Rouge.

“I got support from everyone at school,” Alexis told WGNO Sports. “I have been thinking about it every night. Every night after practice I say I am going to win state this year.”

Alexis also competes in the shot put. She is the first Lady Owl to compete in two throwing events at the state meet in back-to-back seasons.

Coach Tanesha Sanchez says Alexis is the picture of determination: “She came out in the rain today, and she performed. The weather doesn’t stop here. She had some things going on this year and missed a few meets, but she bounced back.”
