An area of Kenner will remain blocked while workers repair the tracks and rail cars following a train derailment.

It happened at about 4:00 Monday afternoon.  15 cars jumped the tracks.  City workers say the cars were carrying coal.

No injuries were reported or hazardous materials leaked.

According to city workers, the derailment also caused the tracks to catch fire.  Fire fighters extinguished the flames.

The tracks in the area remained damaged Monday night.  Also, many of the cars that jumped the tracks will need to have their wheels repaired at the scene before they can be moved.  Workers planned to remain on the scene through the night making the repairs.

The road at Kenner Avenue and Farm is blocked as workers remove the cars and repair the tracks.  City workers expected the job to take about 24 hours.
