Tempers apparently flared as at least a thousand people waited in line in Chalmette to sign up on a waiting list for public housing vouchers.

St Bernard deputies say they arrested six people following three fights in the line.  They say at least one of the fights stemmed from someone cutting in line.  All of the people arrested face a disturbing the peace charge.

“They had a fight over here.  They had a fight over there and a fight over there.  And I was in the building when the head officer man said, ‘If you don’t get controlled, I’m shutting it down.’  So they kept fighting and he said, ‘That’s it. No more’,” said Leann Williams who was waiting in line to get on the voucher list.

The office closed a little after 2:00 in the afternoon but will reopen at 9:00 in the morning for people to return and apply for help.
