Hornets To Announce New Team Name Thursday

The New Orleans Hornets will announce the team’s new name and colors Thursday afternoon.  According to reports, the new name will be the Pelicans and the team’s colors will be blue, red, and gold.

It won’t be the first time the city has had a professional sports team with the Pelicans name.  Depending upon your age, you may have seen the city’s minor league baseball team of the same name play.

The decision to go with Pelicans is getting mixed reviews from basketball fans in the city.  No doubt, the latest trend in the NBA is to pick edgy names that are not plural.  The Heat and Thunder are two of the most respected teams in the league.

At the corner of Magazine Street and Napoleon Avenue Wednesday night, about 20 people gathered at an outdoor basketball court to play pickup games.

“The Pelicans?  They’re just gonna fly away.  The Hornets sounds better ’cause they can sting,” said one man waiting for his turn to play.

According to reports, team owner Tom Benson also considered the names Swamp Dogs, Mosquitos, Bull Sharks, and Rougarou.

“It seems like there’s a lot [of names] thrown out there.  A lot of them just seemed better than Pelicans really,” said another player while taking a break between games.

But other fans are embracing the new name.  The pelican is, of course, the state bird and is on the Louisiana flag.  Supporters of the new name say if the team becomes one of the best in the league, like Benson’s Saints, then respect for the name will grow.

“In a year or two, I mean, I think we’ll be a playoff team, a force to be reckoned with, hopefully,” another player said just before taking to the court.

Do you like a potential name change from the New Orleans Hornets to the New Orleans Pelicans? My answer is no.

I understand what Tom Benson is aiming for with the potential new name. Pelicans are a part of our history. They played for years at Tulane and Carrollton. They returned for one season in 1977 to play baseball at the Superdome but somehow it doesn’t seem to be a good fit.

pelicansI have heard a lot of support for Krewe and personally I like Brass. New Orleans Brass rolled off of our tongues as we watched minor league hockey.

We do know the Saints approached the Voodoo about getting that name back from our arena football league. A source says there was never a serious negotiation.

Pelicans are the state bird. We love the brown pelican but as a name for our pro basketball team, nah.

The New Orleans Hornets will become … the Pelicans?!?

Say it ain’t so, Tom Benson! Tell us the name of our NBA franchise isn’t going to be “the Pelicans”.  Not the name of the old, beloved, minor league baseball team?!?  It can’t be true!

But you’re the billionaire.   The 1200th or so richest man on the planet.  I guess you can name your $350 million franchise whatever you like.  But please tell me its not the Pelicans.

“Nothing strikes fear into an opponent like an angry Pelican!”   Huh?!?

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that you’ve got to get right.  New Orleans is a unique city and that’s why the name Jazz was such a perfect fit.  Mr Benson, how about the New Orleans “Vibe” or the “Beat” or maybe the “Soul”.   Something unique.   Something different.

The Pelicans were a great minor league name for our baseball team.  But this is the big leagues, the NBA.   And we need a big league name.

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their mascot to the Pelicans according to Yahoo Sports.
