NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Car manufacturer Kia is recalling roughly 72,000 model year 2008 and 2009 Sportage vehicles due to what the company is referring to as a “thermal event.”

According to a PDF posted with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the SUVs contain a wire harness covering the Hydraulic Electronic Unit (HECU) that may be improperly sealed allowing water to get on the circuit board, which may short and cause an engine compartment fire.

Kia says it will notify owners of affected vehicles later this month. Dealers will inspect the connector pins for corrosion and if the issue is found, they will replace the HECU assembly and connector cover.
