(WGNO) — What are you paying for your turkey this year?
The American Farm Bureau Federation has released its yearly analysis of the cost of Thanksgiving dinner.
For 2016, a meal for 10 people is $49.87 on average. That’s down 24 cents from 2015.
“Consumers will pay less than $5 per person for a classic Thanksgiving dinner this year,” AFBF Director of Market Intelligence Dr. John Newton said. “We have seen farm prices for many foods – including turkeys – fall from the higher levels of recent years. This translates into lower retail prices for a number of items as we prepare for Thanksgiving and confirms that U.S. consumers benefit from an abundant, high-quality and affordable food supply.”
The AFBF uses a set menu for calculating the cost. It includes: turkey and stuffing, rolls, sweet potatoes, peas, cranberries, a vegetable tray, and pumpkin pie.
This year, the cost of the 16-pound turkey totaled at $22.74, 30-cents less than last year.
The price for 12 rolls went up the most between 2015 and 2016, an increase of 21-cents a package.
A total of 148 volunteer shoppers checked prices at grocery stores in 40 states for this year’s survey.
Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers look for the best prices, don’t use special promo coupons or purchase deals – like getting a free turkey for spending $50.
The AFBF started its Thanksgiving dinner survey in 1986. That year, the average cost for a dinner for 10 people was $28.74.
The cheapest price was in 1987, when the total dinner costs rang up at $24.51.
Farm Bureau’s survey menu has remained unchanged since 1986 to allow for consistent price comparisons.
