SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) – There’s nothing better than a deep-fried turkey at the Thanksgiving dinner table, but there are a lot of hazards associated with frying the big bird.

That’s why St. Tammany Fire District #1 will host a turkey-frying demonstration at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the parking lot at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Bayou Lane across from Slidell Feed & Seed.

There will be a live fire demonstration, as well as handouts with safety tips for how to properly deep fry a turkey. You can even bring your kids to the event, and firefighters will let them sit in and explore fire trucks.

Some of the hazards associated with frying turkeys include:

  • Units can easily tip over, spilling hot cooking oil over a large area.
  • An overfilled cooking pot or partially frozen turkey will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is inserted.
  • A small amount of cooking oil coming into contact with the burner can cause a large fire.
