Makin’ Groceries: Did you know Zuppardo’s was started with a mule driven cart full of bananas?

METAIRIE (WGNO) - "He'd borrow the mule and the wagon, take a consignment load of ripe bananas after school, and he would go up and down the streets peddling," says the president of Zuppardo's Family Supermarket, Peter Zuppardo.

"Zuppardo's fruit store was the way we ended up getting into the grocery business. It was his philosophy that we follow to this day," says Zuppardo.

If the customers wanted something, all they had to do was ask, and that's what makes Zuppardo's Family Supermarket a success after 90 years in business and counting.

"It's not my job to sell you what I want you to buy, it's my job to have what you want when you come in," says Zuppardo.

Those familiar aisles at Zuppardo’s really did start with the Zuppardo family at that fruit store. Zuppardo’s father, grandfather, grandmother, one of his uncle's and one of his cousins are in that old photograph.

Zuppardo’s parents were married in 1934, built the store together from next to nothing and lived above their labor of love.

The grand opening in 1963 is the same location off of Veterans Memorial Boulevard that devoted shoppers continue to frequent to this day.

It's that Zuppardo name that families can trust.
