Relief: Etling, Guice lead LSU past Jacksonville State

LSU head coach Les Miles changed quarterbacks, and the change may be one that lasts.

Backup quarterback Danny Etling relieved starting quarterback Brandon Harris in the second quarter and led LSU to a 34-13 win Saturday night over FCS power Jacksonville State.

An announced crowd of 98,389 at Tiger Stadium watched Etling throw a 46 yard touchdown pass to DeSean Smith on his first series in the second quarter. Etling ran two yards for a score in the third quarter.

Etling, a transfer from Purdue, completed 6 of 14 passes for 100 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Eltling completed 6 of his first 8 passes as LSU scored 27 points in the second quarter.

LSU head coach Les Miles said he considered playing Etling last Saturday against Wisconsin, but felt “the situation was difficult.”

“Brandon (Harris) didn’t look comfortable. Danny played well, to a point.”

LSU junior running back Leonard Fournette did not play in the game. He sat with an ankle injury. Derrius Guice ran 19 times for 155 and a touchdown.

Tre’Davious White returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown with :20 to play in the second quarter.

The game was delayed 56 minutes by lightning. The game kicked off at 7:26 pm.

LSU improved to 1-1 on the season. The Tigers play Mississippi State at 6 pm Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
