Bay St. Louis police chief dies after shooting himself outside police station

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (WGNO) – The chief of police in Bay St. Louis died this afternoon from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam said Chief Mike DeNardo shot himself outside the police station this afternoon.

Adam said DeNardo had been "relieved of his duties" as police chief today. Deputies with the sheriff's office went to the police station to get DeNardo's equipment, Adam said, and to escort DeNardo from the building.

He would not say why DeNardo had been terminated, but he did say that DeNardo was a friend and that officers were "taking it rough."

Myrna Green, the head of the Hancock County Tourism Bureau, said the entire community is in shock.

Green said she has known DeNardo for at least 10 years and said she considered him a friend.
