Apple announces new iPhone 7, 7Plus and Apple Watch Series 2

Cupertino, Calif. (WGNO) – Apple unveiled its newest line of smart watches and smart phones Wednesday afternoon at its annual event. The Apple Watch and the iPhone are getting updates and will be available to pre-order on Friday, with the actual product launches scheduled for September 16. That’s next week! So it’s a quick turnaround for the company compared to its usual product roll-out.

iPhone

The newest iPhones, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, come with all the bells and whistles you would expect on a newer iPhone: faster processor, better display, better camera, etc. But there are a few new specs that are raising eyebrows. Storage levels have been doubled, so instead of having 16, 64 and 128-GB options, you’ll now have the choice of 32, 128, 256-GB options for your storage needs. There’s also the option of a new fifth color: Jet Black (only available in the middle and high end storage options).

As for what’s underneath the hood, so to speak, the home button will now feature Force Touch, an option that was on the screens of the iPhone 6s/6sPlus. This allow users to be able to do different things on the phone just by pressing the home button with different pressures. As for the phone itself, its now water and dust resistant. So no worries if you accidentally jump in the pool or drop it in the toilet (I know there are a few of you out there who’ve done this). Keep in mind though, the certification level is IP67, meaning the water resistant isn’t long term and only up to about 3 feet deep. So you’ll want to get your new phone out of the water as quick as possible.

The iPhone 7Plus will feature dual cameras: one wide angle lens and the other a telephoto lens enabling a 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The camera on the front of both models also received an upgrade, bumping up from 5MP to 7MP for your selfies and FaceTime videos.

On the audio front, what was widely expected did indeed occur. Apple has done away with the headphone jack on the bottom of the phone. Audio will now output from the lightning connector where you charge your phone. A new set of lightning earbuds AND a dongle to connect your regular headphones to the lightning port are included with the box so no new add-ons will be required for purchase. And speaking of audio, the new phones will also feature two speakers, one at the top and one at the bottom to provide stereo sound.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch will get a few more bells and whistles as well with a new piece of hardware coming out appropriately called Series 2. The newer watch will feature a dual-core processor for more responsive feedback, a brighter screen and built in GPS so you no longer need to be tethered to your phone when using the watch for fitness activities. The Apple Watch Series 2 is also water proof up to 50m which means you can now use the watch to track your swimming activities as well. The Series 2 watch will start at $369.

If you’re looking for a slightly cheaper Apple Watch, the original, now the Series 1, will be slightly upgraded. You won’t get the swim proof option, the brighter screen or the built in GPS, but you will get the dual-core processor for faster feedback starting at $269.

The iPhone 7/7Plus and Apples Watch Series 2 will be available for pre-order this Friday, September 9 with the product launches set for next week: Friday, September 16.
