NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- The New Orleans Saints fell to the Baltimore Ravens in the final preseason game 23-14. The Saints finished 0-4 in the preseason. The black and gold have lost nine consecutive preseason games.
Now, the Saints have to cut their roster down to 53 players by 3 p.m. Saturday.
"It's always difficult, you never get used to it. You recognize the amount of work that goes into it. For guys especially down to this final cut down, I'm sure there are a handful of guys that are really hoping for a practice squad opportunity. Of course, a number of these guys will have that. It's never easy," said Saints head coach Sean Payton.
Quarterback Drew Brees started in the final exhibition game. This was Brees' first time playing in the last preseason game since 2006. He finished 3 of 6 for 40 yards. Running back Mark Ingram ran for 21 yards on three carries. Saints kicker Kai Forbath would finish the drive with a 36 yard field goal in the first quarter. Connor Barth later made a 40 yard field goal in the first quarter.
The Saints offensive line continued its preseason struggles. Quarterbacks Luke McCown and Garrett Grayson were sacked a total of three times. McCown's sack turned into a Ravens touchdown.
"We've been a little bit of work in progress up front on the offensive line. Hopefully that can be cleaned up quickly," said Payton.
As most of the starters sat after the first series, Andrus Peat continued playing at left guard to get more reps. He played most of the preseason at right guard.
Grayson finished 11 of 16 for 98 yards, which included a 3 yard touchdown pass to Austin Johnson to finish the fourth quarter.
The Saints host the Oakland Raiders in the first regular season game on Sunday, September 11.
