Love it, Like it, Hate it: Travel Snacks!

Let’s face it, it’s easy to slip into “vacation mode” when we travel; healthy eating can quickly get out of whack.  Once we’ve reached our destination, we’re on different schedules, likely without access to our usual healthy options – plus we want to sample the various foods that are unique to the area.

So if we can at least keep things in check nutritionally while we’re traveling to our destination, that can be half the battle. Today we’re Getting the Skinny on travel snacks, including options to pack with you, and if you’re flying MSY, we’ve got last-minute good-for-you finds at Louis Armstrong International Airport!

Tip:  Look for foods that pack well for travel, and provide good protein, fiber, and/or healthful fats to help sustain energy and keep hunger at bay.

Stay hydrated:  Travel, especially airline travel, can be dehydrating, so be sure to drink up.  Buy a bottle of water once you’re through security, or bring your own reuseable bottle & fill up once past security.

LOVE IT!

Smoothie King Gladiator:  The Gladiator Smoothie is a choose-two-fruits option – but you’re not limited to just fruits: top picks include half a banana, almonds, and/or peanut butter.

Snapea Crisps A 22-piece serving has just 110 calories and 17 grams of carbs, plus four grams of fiber and five grams of protein.

KIND Bars, especially STRONG + KIND bars

 Hard-Boiled Eggs or String Cheese

Quest Bars (or Power Crunch or Think Thin or CostCo’s Kirkland Protein bar)

Leftovers from home:  leftover dinner protein + veggies, or lean meats in whole grain wrap

Bottled Water or Unsweetened Tea (black or green tea)

LIKE IT! {All available at MSY|Louis Armstrong International Airport!)

Barefruit's Crunchy Cinnamon Apple Chips have 180 calories and 8 grams of fiber for the entire bag of crispy, crunchy apple slices. Main drawback is that it’s mostly carb, no protein or healthful fats.

Jack Links Turkey Jerky or Original or Peppered Beef Jerky crams as much as 45 grams of protein into a single pouch. Main drawback is sodium + added nitrites.

 Chobani Flavored Yogurt

 HATE IT!

The Obviously UNhealthful:  Candy bars – Chips – Sugar Soft Drinks

 The Not-So-Obvious UNhealthful:

Sugary Juices – Sweet Tea – Sugary Trail Mix – Pretzels & Pretzel Crisps – Gardetto’s – Chex Mix
