FOLLOWING IS COMMENTARY FROM KAARE JOHNSON. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THE COMMENTARY ARE HIS OWN:
What a great job being a New Orleans firefighter.
At the end of your career, when you're totally healthy, you claim disability, it gets granted by the board, and in some cases you receive more money retired than when you were actually working. In one year, 94 percent of retiring New Orleans firefighters received disability on top of their retirement payments.
That same year, the rest of the state of Louisiana had 10 percent of their retiring fire fighters on disability. In the 63 other parishes in the state, one out of 10 retired firefighters are on disability. In Orleans Parish or New Orleans, it's 19 out of 20.
The reason is simple, firefighters, usually within a year of their retirement, lie about an injury.
A chiropractor, often times the same one for all these firefighters, approves the fake disability. And Orleans Parish taxpayers are on the hook for their free ride.
You know what stinks about this, besides the blatant criminal activity of these retired firefighters, is the legitimate fireman who truly is disabled.
The guy that is hurt and would probably give every penny back just to have his health, while these other charlatans are faking injuries and stealing money.
I hope they all get prosecuted and go to jail. They all give legitimate fire fighters, like my grandfather, a former New Orleans firemen, who died fighting a fire, a bad name.
