Over $20K raised in two days for fallen NOPD officer Tony Mitchell
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – An online fundraising account set up to help the family of fallen NOPD officer Tony Mitchell has exceeded its fundraising goal in two days.
Mitchell, 45, a 19-year veteran of NOPD, was killed Friday after he was struck by a vehicle and thrown off the West Bank Expressway.
He leaves behind two children, a 7-year-old and a 3-year-old, and a wife of nine years.
“He was a great police officer,” said NOPD Chief Michael Harrison. “Community members all spoke highly of him. It’s very sad to have to again inform family members that a loved one was killed.”
A GoFundMe account for Mitchell set a goal of $20,000, all of which will go to his wife and children.
By 3:50 p.m. Monday, the site had raised $21,800.
