Plane crashes in Lake Pontchartrain, 1 person rescued but 2 remain missing

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- New Orleans police say a plane with three people on board crashed into Lake Pontchartrian.

They say it happened a little before 9:00 on Saturday night, August 27 near Lakefront Airport.

According to police, the plane was a Cessna with two men, one of them being the pilot and a woman on board.  The NOFD says the plane crashed while attempting to land during a training exercise at the airport.

They say the woman was rescued by a passing yacht and was taken by ambulance to Ochsner Hospital.

Airport officials say the woman didn't have serious injuries and will recover.

The Coast Guard is using a Dolphin helicopter to help boats that are also on the scene.  The NOPD's dive team and a New Orleans Fire Department boat are helping with the search.

Police said Sunday morning that divers were able to locate the wreckage.  But they later reported that the debris that was discovered is unrelated to the crash.  Also, as of Sunday afternoon, there was no update on the two men who remained missing.
