NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - In the first two series against the New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 148 yards with two touchdowns as the Steelers dominated the Saints 27-14 in the third preseason game at the Superdome.
The Saints have yet to win a preseason game this season.
"Listen, I'm not going to give ourselves any excuses, I think we should have played better over the last two weeks, and that part is disappointing. It just furthermore reiterates the fact that there's a great sense of urgency. We still have to get better in a lot of different areas. But we have not yet, for one of these opponents, like really gone into a hard core game plan like we will for the regular season," said Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Brees was 9 of 12 for 78 yards with one touchdown to Willie Snead. Snead's touchdown was an amazing one as he juggled the ball while falling to his back in the endzone.
Undrafted rookie wide receiver Tommylee Lewis also made a 31-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Garrett Grayson. Grayson finished with one touchdown and two interceptions.
Yet, the Saints offensive line continued to struggle. Coach Sean Payton said that, among many things, is of great concern.
"One thing that's concerning and troubling right now, it's week 3 in the preseason but our ability to protect and our ability to rush the passer those are two things that I think if you just watch the game that are concerning," said Payton.
Payton insists the Saints are not spiraling.
"Fortunately we have more time here, but we have to have a sense of urgency about some of these things that have shown up maybe more than just one game," he said.
The Saints allowed a total of 342 yards to the Steelers.
Left tackle Terron Armstead and tight end Michael Hoomanawanui left the game in the first half due to injuries. Payton didn't comment on their status.
The Saints play the Baltimore Ravens in the final preseason game on September 1st.
