Off-duty NOPD officer killed in traffic accident on West Bank Expressway

MARRERO, La. (WGNO) – An off-duty NOPD officer was killed this morning after he was struck by a vehicle and thrown off the West Bank Expressway.

NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said 45-year-old Tony Mitchell was driving his personal vehicle on the Expressway near Ames Boulevard just before 8 a.m. when his car stalled.

He was standing outside of his vehicle, and when another vehicle slowed down to avoid hitting him, another vehicle crashed into the first vehicle, which then ran over Mitchell. Mitchell fell off the elevated highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mitchell was a 19-year NOPD veteran. He leaves behind two children.

“He was a great police officer,” Harrison said. “Community members all spoke highly of him. It’s very sad to have to again inform family members that a loved one was killed.”

State Police is handling the investigation.
