Saints to honor Will Smith with decals on helmets

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The New Orleans Saints announced Saturday that a Will Smith decal will be worn on every helmet for the rest of the season.

The decal displays Smith’s number, 91.

Smith was shot and killed April 9 after a minor car crash in the Lower Garden District and an altercation with Cardell Hayes, the man accused of shooting Smith seven times in the back and once in the chest. Hayes is also accused of shooting and injuring Smith’s wife, Racquel.

Smith was born and raised in New York, played football for Ohio State and spent his entire professional football career with the New Orleans Saints. He retired in 2014.

The decal announcement on the Saints’ Facebook page caused a bit of an uproar, particularly from people who say it’s not fair for the Saints to wear a decal honoring Smith, while the NFL said the Dallas Cowboys can’t wear a decal honoring the police officers who were shot and killed by a sniper during a peaceful protest in July.
