Payton calls out offense in loss to Texans
Saints head coach Sean Payton got right to the point.
“It is as bad as it has been in awhile,” said Payton of his offense.
The Saints were held to 276 yards of total offense and three field goals in a 16-9 loss to the Texans Saturday night in Houston. New Orleans turned the ball over three more times, making it a total of 7 in a pair of preseason losses.
The Saints had 82 rushing yards on 26 carries.
It is now two calendar years since the Saints won a preseason game. The last was a win over the Colts in August of 2014.
The Saints got a 33 yard field goal from Connor Barth, and field goals of 37 and 27 yards from Kai Forbath.
Drew Brees completed 5 of 8 passes for 29 yards. Backup Luke McCown was 14 of 19 for 118 yards.
On the opening series of the first quarter, the Saints forced a Houston punt. But, Marcus Murphy fumbled the on the return, setting up a Houston touchdown.
“It just can’t happen,” said Payton. “We will find another returner.”
The Saints did have a chance to tie the game on the final play. But, on a play that began on the Houston 12 yard line, Garrett Grayson was intercepted by Houston’s Robert Nelson.
The Saints are home Friday night to play Pittsburgh.
