State trooper shot in 7th Ward Sunday; one of three suspects shot and killed on scene
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – A state trooper was shot in the arm Sunday afternoon while trying to stop a suspected stolen vehicle at the corner of Law and New Orleans streets. One of three suspects who reportedly started firing at the trooper during the traffic stop was shot and killed by NOPD and State Police officers who responded to the trooper’s call for help.
According to police, the trooper tried to pull over a suspected stolen vehicle about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, when three suspects got out of the vehicle and reportedly starting shooting at the trooper. Gunfire was exchanged, and the trooper was shot in the arm.
The three suspects fled on food into the Seventh Ward neighborhood.
Within minutes, officers with NOPD and State Police arrived onto the scene and began to search for the suspects.
One of the three suspects started reportedly started shooting at police again, prompting NOPD and State Police officers to return fire. The suspect was shot and later died at the scene.
The two other suspects fled on foot in the area. NOPD SWAT and K9 and LSP immediately set up a perimeter in the area in and around Hardin Playground at 2600 Allen Street. The two suspects are still at large.
The injured State Trooper was taken to University Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
The Federal Monitor and Independent Police Monitor were on the scene and actively monitoring the investigation.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, identify the suspect who was shot and determine the cause of death.
