Historic flood: Here’s how to help

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - New Orleans was largely spared from historic flooding that has killed six people across the state and left tens of thousands displaced, but area businesses, agencies and people are coming together to help our neighbors in need.

The following are just a few businesses and nonprofits taking donations on behalf of flood victims:

American Red Cross - Call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word LAFLOODS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Call (985) 634-4883 for volunteer opportunities.

Finn McCool’s Irish Pub - Drop off cots or air mattresses (with pump), bedding, pillows, towels/wash cloths, toiletries (soap, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc), water, coffee/tea, non-perishable food. Collections are being accepted through Wednesday.

Junior League of New Orleans – diapers of all sizes, women’s feminine hygiene products, $20 gift cards to Target and Walmart

United Way of Southeast Louisiana – click for a list of items being collected and information on other ways to help.

Ben Becnel’s – The Farm - non-perishable food, pet supplies and bedding to the farm are being accepted at the farmer's market in Belle Chasse through Friday.

Oak Family Dental -  collecting toiletries, children's toys and cleaning supplies to be dropped off at the office in Metairie.

Crossfit Roux - cots and bedding, toiletries, water, diapers, baby clothes and $20 Wal-Mart and Target gift cards.

Second Harvest Food Bank – drop off nonperishable food and monetary donations to any Rouses location.

Animal Rescue New Orleans – needs cat supplies – dry and canned cat food, scoop-able and clay litter, cat beds, toys and litter boxes – and animal foster families for animals displaced from flooded shelters.

Treo - Cots or air mattresses (with pump), bedding and pillows, toiletries, water, coffee and non-perishable food. Drop off starts at 4 p.m. daily and lasts through Wednesday.

Saint Catherine of Siena Church - food, water, clothes, toiletries, diapers. Drop off in the gathering area of the Church,  between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.
