Authorities identify three officers killed in Baton Rouge attack

BATON ROUGE -- All three law enforcement officers killed in Sunday's attack in Baton Rouge have been identified.

The Baton Rouge Police Department says Montrell Jackson, 32, and Matthew Gerald, 41 died when a man ambushed several officers. A sheriff's deputy was also killed. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office has identified him as Brad Garafola, 45.

Two other sheriff's deputies were injured in the attack. Nicholas Tullier, 41, is in critical condition. Bruce Simmons, 51, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Baton Rouge police officials say Jackson was a 10 year veteran of the police department. He leaves behind a wife and a four-month-old son.

Gerald was a former Marine and Blackhawk crew chief in the Army. He joined the Baton Rouge Police Department four months ago. He leaves behind a wife and a 3-year-old daughter.

Garafola was a 24-year-old veteran with the Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office. The father of four was described as a family man.

Authorities say both of these men were assigned to the Uniform Patrol Bureau and were "great examples of what it means to protect and serve."

"It is a sad day for all those in our law enforcement family, both within BRPD and beyond, as we face this senseless act of violence. During this difficult time, our prayers continue to be with all those affected by today’s shooting, including especially the loved ones of Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald, as well as each and every member of our department and our community.

"We ask you to join us in prayer both for those affected, and for peace across Baton Rouge and our entire nation," the Baton Rouge Police Department said in a statement.

A candlelight vigil for Matthew Gerald is scheduled for Monday 8 to 10 p.m. at the Healing Place Church at 19202 Highland Rd, Baton Rouge. So far, more than 200 people said they are going to the event.
