BATON ROUGE – Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson were two of many people who attended Alton Sterling‘s funeral Friday in Baton Rouge.
The ceremony was held at Southern University.
Sterling was shot and killed while he was pinned to the ground by two police officers on July 5.
Police say they shot him because he tried to reach for a gun in his pocket.
Sterling’s death and the shooting death of Philando Castile in Minnesota set off nationwide protests against police killings.
Five police officers were killed and seven more injured in a sniper attack during one of those protests in Dallas last week.
Police say the shooter, Micah Johnson, said he wanted to kill white police officers.
