New Orleans (WGNO) - Summer should be a fun and carefree time of year for kids and teens, but for those families who count on school meals, summer is the hungriest time of year. With summer just around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about where kids will be for those summer days and where will they be able to receive healthy, nutritious meals in safe environments. To connect more kids with the fuel they need to start the summer right, New Orleans No Kid Hungry is kicking off the summer meals program celebrating the theme, “Food, Friends & Fun”. The program offers free nutritional breakfast and lunch to all children ages 18 and under.

The New Orleans No Kid Hungry works with meal providers and meal sites throughout the city and many of those sites still have enrollment slots available for kids to participate in their summer camp which provide great programming and meals throughout the summer.

“Today, far too many kids are not able to access the summer meals program. We have committed to breaking through barriers to connect kids and teens with free, healthy meals so that they can continue to learn and grow during the summer” said Rhonda Jackson, Director of New Orleans No Kid Hungry. “We coordinate with meal providers (Second Harvest, Fresh Food Factor and Sodexo) who prepare and deliver 2 meals a day to eligible sites where kids congregate for meals.”

This summer, New Orleans No Kid Hungry is partnering with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, Housing Authority of New Orleans, New Orleans Public Libraries, Volunteers of America, Department of Education, Healthy School Food Collaborative and many local churches and non-profit organizations.
