LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said he will wait till Thursday to name his starter for Friday’s NCAA game against Utah Valley in the Baton Rouge Regional. Here’ why:

The Tigers are the #8 national seed. Since the NCAA went to the current 64 team format in 1999, LSU is the second team to earn 5 straight national seeds. Stanford earned 6 consecutive from 1999 to 2004.

The 2016 team has won 14 of its last 16 games.

Paul Mainieri said this team reminds him of the 2008 team, that went to Omaha after winning 23 consecutive games.

Game time for LSU vs Utah Valley is 2 pm at Alex Box Stadium at Skip Bertman Field.  LSU is 77 wins, 16 losses in NCAA regional games at home.

At 7 pm Friday, second seeded Rice takes on third seed Southeastern Louisiana.
