NOPD says 17 injured in Ninth Ward shooting spree Sunday, police hold community response Monday

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Shots are  fired in the Ninth Ward Sunday injuring several people at Bunny Friend Park.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. Sunday and police say at least ten people were taken to the hospital suffering from either a gunshot wound or unknown injury.

Officers say more than 500 people were gathering in a playground to shoot a music video. They tell WGNO the event was unpermitted and unplanned and police were on their way to disrupt the gathering when the suspects began shooting into the crowd.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Superintendent Michael Harrison say they're asking witnesses to come forward and help them solve this heinous crime.

The shooting is under investigation.
