NEW ORLEANS (WGNO)- We all know New Orleans is not a mountainous region and it's hard to find any place that goes uphill, but if you build it, we will climb!
The first climbing gym in New Orleans is about to open, and News with a Twist Reporter, Kenny Lopez gave it a try!

Nestled near the Mississippi River and the old Market Street Power plant is a brand new indoor climbing spot called, New Orleans Boulder Lounge. This new indoor climbing facility is in the historic cotton press building, a 125-year old warehouse. New Orleans Boulder Lounge will feature 2,500 square feet of bouldering, a form of climbing at lower heights without ropes.

"We've been lacking a climbing destination in New Orleans, and there's a dedicated community here. Climbing is beneficial physically and mentally. We wanted to build something where the community could come socialize, and have fun," Eli Klarman, Co-owner and Director of Operations, New Orleans Boulder Lounge.

This is the new spot to come to feel that cliff hanging adrenaline.

"We have different levels of difficulty from beginner to pro-climber," Klarman said.

This place is very much a community space with a real New Orleans feel.

"The colors we chose came off shotgun homes in the city. We want it to look and feel like New Orleans," he said

"We are a climbing gym, but we also have a wonderful training facility, a yoga studio, and a lounge space where we will have a cafe and live music," Andrew Dreis, Director of Programming, New Orleans Boulder Lounge, said.

They feel New Orleans is ready for this type of fitness facility.

"New Orleans is the last remaining major city in the country without a climbing wall. The nearest climbing wall before this was built is 6 hours away. It's about time we have one here. I really want people to come here and feel like they are home," Klarman said.

This climbing gym is the first in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina after Climb Max on Canal Blvd.  closed.

The grand opening for New Orleans Boulder Lounge will be this Saturday, July 18. NOBL will be open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
New Orleans Boulder Lounge is located at 146 Tchoupitoulas St.

Base membership will be $60 for adults. Student discounts are also available. NOBL will also schedule special events, birthday parties, and corporate team building exercises.

Though I’m excited to see it, it’s not the first. ClimbMax (sp?) was on Canal Blvd near the Bulldog a number of years ago.

Fact checking is a very important part of a news organization. ClimbMax was here prior to Katrina. Don’t get ahead of yourselves…..

Martha already mentioned Slidell Rocks (approx. 30 minute drive from New Orleans), but there is also Rok Haus in Lafayette (approx. 2 hours from New Orleans).

Slidell Rocks Climbing Gym opened in 2005 and still is in operation. It is only 30 minutes away.
