Police release video of man in search on UNO campus

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The University of New Orleans canceled afternoon and evening classes Thursday, due to police activity in the area.

The university was placed on a lockdown for about two hours around lunchtime while police searched for several suspects who ran on to the campus after a police chase. Authorities spotted the suspects in the area of  Killdeer Street and Bertha Drive around 11:30 a.m. They believe one of them had been involved in burglaries in the Lake Vista and Lakeview area.   When officers approached the suspect’s SUV, the passenger fled on foot and the driver of the SUV fled the scene.

The suspect that fled on foot was taken into custody.  The other suspect drove to a parking lot on UNO campus where he then got out and managed to escape from police.

From about 11:30 a.m. — 2 p.m. Thursday New Orlean and campus police officers asked students, faculty and staff who were in campus buildings to stay there and people who were not already on campus to stay away.

Benjamin Franklin High School was also briefly placed on a lockdown.
