It’s been nine years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.

On the storm’s anniversary Friday, city leaders, funeral directors and others gathered at the Katrina Memorial Cemetery in Mid-City.  The cemetery is the final resting spot for nearly 100 Katrina victims whose bodies were never claimed.

“These mausoleums are 99 percent full of unclaimed and unidentifiable,” said Sandra Rhodes Duncan, a funeral director who spoke at the event.

The anniversary also included events in the Lower Ninth Ward.
