NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Ever heard of “culinary medicine?” Get’s your attention, right? Tulane University’s School of Medicine opened a teaching kitchen. It’s the first of its kind in the nation.
There’s no such thing as too many cooks in this kitchen, because they’re not chefs, they’re Tulane Medical Students.
“I always really enjoyed cooking but I thought I was going to have to put that on hold while I was studying,” says med student Alan Noll.
They probably never thought cooking would be a part of their med school program.
“I felt like I knew things coming in and then I realized I have no idea how to chop a zucchini.” adds Noll.
The goal: to mold these students into doctors who can one day help their patients make good dietary decisions.
“It also teaches you how to talk to your patients about it and not just say you need to lose weight so why are you eating so much fat? Maybe you should try this recipe,” says med student Danielle Day.
On today’s menu: a healthy Caesar Salad and fish tacos. Chef Leah and Chef London are coaching the students on whipping up the dishes. Who says healthy food can’t taste good?
“There’s such a disconnect between food and health. So that’s what we’re trying to do here, is bridge the gap between nutrition, food, health and medicine,” says Chef London.
A delicious yet unique approach to health that’s setting a standard across the nation.
“Our goal is to show that this is efficacious, show that this has good outcomes for patients and Physicians in a way it makes sense for medical schools, insurance companies, the government, to pay for this type of program,” says Dr. Timothy Harlan with the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine.
When it’s all plated up, it’s looks delicious. Better eat up; that’s doctor’s orders!
