Search Begins For New NOPD Police Chief

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - Hours after being sworn in as Interim Chief of the New Orleans Police Department former Commander Michael Harrison met with residents at L.B. Landry High School.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu says it’s wise to promote from within, but he hasn’t said whether Harrison will get the job permanently.

Serpas’ retirement comes at a time when the city has dealt with a number of high profile shootings, and at a time when the NOPD is dealing with a troubling attrition rate meaning more officers are leaving the force than joining. Harrison says he’s up for the challenge.

Harrison, a West Bank resident and 23 year veteran of NOPD spent Monday night at one of several budget meetings where residents vented about crippling streets, a lack of jobs, and violence.
