(WGNO) – A warning for people who spend time in Louisiana’s brackish waters. Levels of flesh eating bacteria are on the rise.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals says harmful bacteria levels in the water now can make going in the water a health risk.

The health warning is to be cautious near the ocean against the potentially deadly Vulnificus virus and the very painful Chikungunya virus.

Both bacterial infections are treatable, but health officials say symptoms escalate the longer you wait.

DHH has recorded a total of 16 combined cases statewide of vacationers getting infected.

They say they’re not trying to alarm but rather keep people informed.
