Superdome Sprinters: Fans Get Fit for Saints Season

NEW ORLEANS (WDNO) - Want to get in shape for football season?  A dedicated group of Saints fans are literally sprinting to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.  News With A Twist reporter Deepak Saini puts on his running shoes to take the challenge.

“3, 2, 1, go!”

When you want to add spirit with your sprints, there’s no better place to run than the Superdome.

“You have Steve Gleason’s statue in the back, everyone here, just being around the dome period, you feel that fight in you.  You have that spirit in you, the who dat, you know,” says sprinter Derrick Townsend.

Derrick Townsend is a flag runner for the Saints.  To get back in shape for the season, he started doing sprints at the dome.

“I came one day on a Sunday.  A few buddies starting picking it up and people started picking it up and we wound up having a group of friends that push each other and motivate each other and that’s what we do,” says Townsend.

The goal:  Meet 2 days a week, run 8 to 12 sprints on a ramp with a 40 degree incline, wit only a :15 break in between.

“I’m just trying to beat Derrick.  He starts out pretty good.  I’ll catch up to him later,” says sprinter Ryan Cochran.

Sprint after sprint, how do you motivate yourself to keep going?

“I have that mental image, if OK, I do 2 more laps, I get a pizza on Tuesday.  I have my cheat meals that I look forward to.  You make those sacrifices and do those 2 more laps and get that victory of eating that pizza, and yes, I can eat a whole pizza.

A good run with a great group of people who make it all worth it.

Derrick Townsend and his friends do the Superdome sprints on the ramp at Poydras Street every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45 p.m.  They say anyone is welcome to join them.

    The November Project has been doing a free workout at the Dome every Wednesday at 6am since January with 80-90 attendees each week. November Project and the groups that have followed it like these Superdome Sprinters are a great example of the vibrant free fitness community in the City. Hopefully the Superdome realizes the civic pride in the facility and the benefit and positive PR these groups provide by attracting people to the area.
